Now, there is really no way I could have made this up if I tried, but a colleague ran across an article and shared it with me. After I read it five or six times, I decided I had to pass it along.
The idea is akin to putting a folding bike into your trunk (because who hasn’t done that????) to take in case the traffic gets to be too much. Again, I hope you take note of the sarcasm in the comment of who hasn’t done that.
The new Q3 is labeled an “urban crossover” and uses satellite navigation to help find a parking spot. Once that is done and you have parallel parked somewhere downtown, a mysterious tray pops out from under your trunk to reveal a scooter of some sort. While the report referred to it as an electric longboard (surfing anyone?) it is really a scooter. According to the story, it can even come with four wheels for those who are scooter-challenged.
The scooter moves at about 8 mph with a top speed of around 19 mph.
One big issue here is that you would have to live in a metro area that allowed these kinds of scooters to be on sidewalks, however, most cities do not – at least not in the United States and at least not those cities you would actually need something like this.
Another issue is no spare tire. Because the scooter takes up the room, there is no room for a spare in the back. Also, in order to get the scooter, you actually have to get the Q3 because, as of right now, it doesn’t come with any other vehicle in Audi’s lineup.
