The BMW Group hit a global sales record in March after selling 240,659 vehicles worldwide, according to the company. The company reported a 3.5% increase in global sales from the same time a year ago.
In the first three months of the year, the BMW Group sold 557,605 vehicles, a 5.9% increase over the same quarter a year ago.
“March 2016 has been the best single month ever for BMW Group sales and I’m delighted to see that our innovative product range is enabling us to achieve ongoing, sustainable and profitable growth,” said Dr Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for sales and marketing BMW, in a statement. “Globally, I am confident that we will see this positive trend continue through the year.”
BMW brand vehicles went over the 200,000 mark for the first time in the 100-year history of the company. It was reported that 201,352 BMWs were sold in March. In the first quarter of the year, there were 478,743 BMWs sold, a 6% increase over the first quarter of 2015.
The South Carolina-produced X3 had an increase in global sales of 27.2% while the X6 sales increased by 15.1% over the same time a year ago.
The Mini brand eclipsed 39,000 vehicles sold globally in March. It was the most cars sold in the brand’s history. In the first quarter of 2016, MINI sales also achieved a new record high with 78,311 units delivered, an increase of 5.4% on last year.
“Customers around the world are responding to the attractive new models we have in our line-up, as is proven by our record sales,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, BMW AG Management Board member responsible for MINI, BMW Motorrad and Rolls-Royce, in a statement. “The recently launched MINI Clubman in particular is attracting new customers, with a total of over 12,000 sold so far this year,”
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars have started production of the new Dawn Drophead Coupe over the first quarter of the year with first customer deliveries of the new vehicle scheduled for the second quarter of 2016.
Brand sales continued to increase in Europe and Asia, but suffered an 8.6% decrease in the Americas as sales in theUnited States dropped by 10.8% for the month. The United Kingdom, France, Spain, Mainland China, South Korea and Canada all had double-digit percentage sales increases for March.
