The company said, in a press release, that the newest BMW 5 Series will be the first automobiles to benefit from the new use of technology.
“We are delighted to reach this genuine milestone in preproduction with the optical measuring cell: A single measurement provides us with a 3D data model of the total vehicle,” said Eduard Obst, head of geometric analysis, measuring technology and cubing said, in a press release. Lengthy individual measurements and data collation are no longer needed – saving time and enhancing quality at the start of series production.”
According to the BMW Group, a robot arm on rails moves around the vehicle taking a 3-D image of the vehicle. Compared to the previous process, the new work includes using two robots used in parallel rather than just one. Each robot has two sensors that capture areas approximately 80 cm. x 80 cm.
The company said it was starting to look at the potential use of the technology at its other automobile plants.
